Built from 1778, this is one of the most relevant and symbolic buildings of the city. It is a piece made by the portuguese architect Antonio Souto, and it constitutes the sanctuary of the patron saint of Pontevedra. The work was paid by the brotherhood Cofradía de Nuestra Señora del Refugio y Divina Peregrina.
The floor is almost round, with the shape of a scallop shell, and it ends in a cross marked in the top and in the vestry. The convex Baroque facade has Neoclassical details from the 18th century, and it is framed by two towers. In the top part there are images of Santiago, San Roque, and the Peregrina, all of them dressed as pilgrims, protectors of the faithful who travelled to Santiago through the Portuguese route. This decorated fachade is preceded by an atrium with stairs, surrounded by a balustrade with pinnacles. It is also remarkable the fountain situated at the foot of the stairs.
Inside the temple, there is a great altarpiece designed by Melchor de Prado in the early 19th century. The interior was completely redesigned in 2008. It can be visited in the worship hours. -
